Running Horses
In celebration of the French Bicentennial on July 14, 1989, I was commissioned by Marshall Field’s, together with the French Tourist Board, to photograph a fashion campaign throughout France. It was a major production, with models including Linda Evangelista, Carrie Otis, and Meghan Douglas.
One of our locations in the south of France was a private ranch, where wranglers were running wild horses behind the models. While we were there creating the fashion images for the campaign, I was equally drawn to something more personal, the horses themselves. I wanted to capture their motion, energy, and freedom apart from the assignment.
That image became far more than just an outtake from a fashion trip. I later included it in my book Natural Beauty / Farber Nudes, and over time it became one of my best-selling gallery prints, eventually selling out in one of its released sizes. For me, it is a perfect example of how some of the most lasting images in my career came from moments where personal instinct took over in the middle of commissioned work.
