Fannie Foxe
"This image is one of my favorites because it’s a photograph about a photograph, and the story behind it is pure 1970s America.
The poster on the wall features Fanne Fox, the infamous burlesque dancer who exploded into headlines after the Wilbur Mills scandal in Washington, DC, and suddenly went from tabloid chaos to a Playboy assignment. Playboy asked me to shoot her, and that was the irony, it was far from the style, feeling, or way I would normally photograph the female form, it leaned into that over-the-top look of the era, but in hindsight, even if it’s far from me stylistically, it’s close to my heart in terms of story and career.
I was building a serious fine-art path around the female form and a museum-level approach, so I kept my name off the credit, and in some cases used a pseudonym, Rupert Danes, just to keep the lines from blurring.
Now it comes full circle, decades later, the image lives exactly where it belongs, in a museum-like setting, with people leaning in, reading, reacting, and realizing there’s always more going on than the surface. That’s the whole point of RDO, a boutique collection of collectible works pulled from five decades, where every image has a backstory, a moment in time, and a reason it still matters."
